  • Cutting board: Provides a stable surface for cutting the cabbage and other ingredients.

  • Mixing bowls: Used to combine the rice with water and to mix the ground meats with other ingredients.

  • Measuring cups: Essential for accurately measuring the water, rice, and tomato sauce.

  • Measuring spoons: Used to measure out the parsley, salt, and pepper.

  • Plate: Used to transfer the cooked cabbage after steaming.

  • Spoon: Useful for mixing ingredients and filling the cabbage leaves with the meat mixture.

  • Tongs: Handy for handling the hot cabbage leaves after they have been steamed.

  • Can opener: Necessary for opening the cans of tomato sauce.

  • Timer: Helps in keeping track of the cooking times for both the steaming and the final cooking of the cabbage rolls.

Storage and Freezing Guidelines for Cabbage Rolls

  • Let the cabbage rolls cool completely before storing or freezing.
  • For storing in the refrigerator, place the cooled cabbage rolls in an airtight container. They will keep well for up to 3-4 days in the fridge.
  • If you plan to freeze the cabbage rolls, follow these steps:
    • Place the cooled cabbage rolls in a freezer-safe container or a resealable freezer bag. If using a container, make sure to leave some space at the top for expansion during freezing.
    • If using a freezer bag, remove as much air as possible before sealing to prevent freezer burn.
    • Label the container or bag with the date and contents for easy identification.
    • Cabbage rolls can be frozen for up to 3 months.
  • To reheat frozen cabbage rolls:
    • Thaw the frozen cabbage rolls overnight in the refrigerator.
    • Place the thawed cabbage rolls in a baking dish and cover with foil.
    • Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 20-30 minutes or until heated through. Alternatively, you can reheat them in the microwave, covered, in 1-2 minute intervals until hot.
  • If you have any leftover tomato sauce, store it separately in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months.

The Best Ways to Reheat Leftover Cabbage Rolls

  • Reheat in the instant pot: place the leftover cabbage rolls back into the instant pot with a small amount of water or broth. Close the lid, set the valve to sealing, and cook on high pressure for 2-3 minutes. Release the pressure naturally for 5 minutes before doing a quick release.

  • Reheat in the oven: preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the cabbage rolls in an oven-safe dish, cover with aluminum foil, and bake for 15-20 minutes or until heated through. Remove the foil for the last 5 minutes to crisp up the top if desired.

  • Reheat in the microwave: place the cabbage rolls in a microwave-safe dish and cover with a damp paper towel. Microwave on high for 1-2 minutes, or until heated through. Stir the rolls halfway through the reheating process to ensure even heating.

  • Reheat on the stovetop: place the cabbage rolls and any remaining sauce in a large skillet or saucepan over medium heat. Cover the pan and simmer for 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the rolls are heated through.

  • Reheat in an air fryer: preheat the air fryer to 350°F (175°C). Place the cabbage rolls in the air fryer basket, ensuring they are not overcrowded. Cook for 3-5 minutes or until heated through, shaking the basket halfway through the reheating process.

Are Cabbage Rolls Healthy or Unhealthy?

The instant pot cabbage rolls recipe, while comforting and flavorful, may not be the healthiest option due to a few factors:

  • The recipe uses a significant amount of ground meat (beef, pork, and veal), which can be high in saturated fat and calories.
  • The dish relies heavily on tomato sauce, which may contain added sugars and sodium.
  • The recipe does not include a significant amount of vegetables beyond the cabbage leaves.

However, there are some positive aspects, such as the use of lean protein sources like ground veal and the inclusion of some vegetables in the form of cabbage, onion, and garlic.

To make this recipe healthier, consider the following modifications:

  • Replace some or all of the ground meat with leaner options like ground turkey or chicken, or even plant-based alternatives like lentils or mushrooms.
  • Use a low-sodium tomato sauce or make your own sauce using fresh tomatoes to reduce the sodium content.
  • Incorporate more vegetables into the filling, such as grated carrots, zucchini, or bell peppers, to increase the nutrient density of the dish.
  • Opt for brown rice instead of white rice to add more fiber and nutrients to the recipe.
  • Reduce the amount of added salt and instead rely on herbs and spices for flavor.

By making these adjustments, you can create a more balanced and nutritious version of the classic cabbage rolls while still enjoying the comforting flavors and textures of this beloved dish.
