Preparation: 30 minutes
Cooking: 1 hour
Total: 1 hour and 30 minutes

Serves:

Ingredients

  • 1 large head of cabbage
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 cup cooked rice
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 can (15 ounces) tomato sauce
  • 1 can (14.5 ounces) diced tomatoes
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 2 teaspoons granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup water

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. Fill a large pot with water and bring it to a boil. Carefully remove the core from the cabbage head and place the whole head in the boiling water. Cook for about 5 minutes, or until the outer leaves start to soften. Remove the cabbage from the pot and let it cool slightly.

  3. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, cooked rice, onion, garlic, thyme, oregano, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until all the ingredients are evenly incorporated.

  4. Gently separate the softened cabbage leaves and lay them flat. Spoon a portion of the ground beef mixture onto the center of each leaf. Fold the sides of the leaf over the filling, then roll it up tightly.

  5. In a separate bowl, mix together the tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, tomato paste, sugar, and water. Pour half of the sauce mixture into the bottom of a baking dish.

  6. Place the stuffed cabbage rolls seam-side down into the baking dish. Pour the remaining sauce mixture over the rolls.

  7. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 1 hour, or until the cabbage rolls are cooked through and the sauce is bubbly.

  8. Serve the golabki hot, spooning some of the sauce over each roll.
