How To Make Anise Scones

These scones have a licorice-like flavor from the anise and are perfect for breakfast or tea time.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon anise seeds
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, chilled and cubed
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and anise seeds.

  3. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  4. In a small bowl, whisk together egg, buttermilk, and vanilla extract.

  5. Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients and mix until a sticky dough forms.

  6. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it gently for about 1 minute.

  7. Pat dough into a circle about 1 inch thick and cut into 8 wedges.

  8. Transfer wedges to baking sheet and bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.

  9. Serve warm with butter or jam.
