Preparation: 15 minutes
Cooking: 1 hour
Total: 1 hour and 15 minutes

Serves:

Ingredients

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. In a small saucepan, melt the sugar over medium heat. Stir constantly until the sugar melts and turns golden brown. Be careful not to burn it.

  3. Quickly pour the melted sugar into a round baking dish, tilting and swirling the dish to evenly coat the bottom. Set aside to cool and harden.

  4. In a large mixing bowl, whisk the eggs until well beaten.

  5. Add the sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, and vanilla extract to the whisked eggs. Whisk until everything is well combined.

  6. Carefully pour the egg mixture into the baking dish with the hardened caramelized sugar.

  7. Place the baking dish into a larger baking pan and fill the larger pan halfway with hot water. This will create a water bath for the flan.

  8. Carefully transfer the pans to the preheated oven and bake for 50-60 minutes, or until the center is set but still slightly jiggly.

  9. Remove the flan from the oven and let it cool to room temperature.

  10. Once cooled, cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, but preferably overnight.

  11. To serve, run a knife along the edges of the dish to loosen the flan. Invert the dish onto a serving plate, allowing the caramel to drizzle over the top of the flan.

  12. Slice and serve chilled. Enjoy!
