Ingredients

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup cocoa
  • 2 large eggs, slightly beaten
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 tsp baking soda

For Frosting:

  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup cocoa
  • 1 stick butter
  • 1 lb powdered sugar
  • Nuts, chopped, as desired
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Instructions

  1. Mix sugar, flour, and cinnamon in a bowl. Mix water, shortening, butter and cocoa in a saucepan and bring to a rapid boil.

  2. Pour the cocoa mixture over dry ingredients and beat until smooth. Add the rest of the ingredients and beat well.

  3. Bake in a greased and floured oblong pan (10x15x1), for 30-40 minutes at 350 degrees. Make frosting 5 minutes before cake is done baking.

For Frosting:

  1. Bring milk, cocoa, and butter to a boil.

  2. Remove from heat and beat in powdered sugar. Add nuts and vanilla.

  3. Ice cake immediately after removing from the oven and serve.
