How To Make Denny’s French Onion Soup Recipe

A classic French Onion soup with rich beef broth, caramelized onions, and melted Gruyere cheese.

Ingredients

  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 4 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 4 cups beef broth
  • 1/2 cup dry red wine
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper
  • 4 slices of French bread, toasted
  • 1 cup grated Gruyere cheese

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, melt the butter over medium heat.

  2. Add the onions and garlic and cook for 25 minutes until they are caramelized and softened.

  3. Add the flour and stir until combined.

  4. Add the beef broth, wine, and Worcestershire sauce and season with salt and pepper.

  5. Bring the soup to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for 20-25 minutes.

  6. Preheat the broiler.

  7. Ladle the soup into oven-safe bowls and place a slice of bread on top of each bowl.

  8. Sprinkle the Gruyere cheese on top of the bread and broil until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

  9. Serve hot.
