How To Make Roasted Paan (Sri-Lankan Bread)
This roasted paan recipe makes a Sri Lankan staple accessible. All you need are six ingredients to recreate this South Asian bread.

Ingredients
For Roasted Paan:
- 2lbflour
- 1tbspyeast
- ¼cupbutter
- 1tbspsalt
- ¼cupsugar
- 4tbspwater,lukewarm, to mix the yeast
- 2cupswater,lukewarm, for the dough
For Oil Mixture:
- ¼cupflour
- ½cupbutter
- 1tbspolive oil
Instructions
Oil Mixture:

In a small bowl, mix together flour, butter and olive oil. Set aside.
Roasted Paan:

Mix yeast and sugar with 4 tablespoons of water and let it bloom for 10 to 15 minutes.

Mix together flour, butter, salt, water, and the yeast mixture into a dough. Knead well.

Rest the dough for 1 hour in a slightly warm, dry place. Cover with a wet towel.

Once the dough has doubled in size, knead again. Then, separate the dough into 200-gram balls and let them rest for 15 minutes in a flat oven pan.

Knead the 200-gram balls into squares with a slight dome on the top.

Now, apply the oil mixture on the top of the dough balls.

Place all the shaped dough balls in a 7-inch baking tray.

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Once preheated, bake bread for 20 to 25 minutes.

After 25 minutes, take the bread tray out of the oven and separate the bread pieces while hot. Lay them on a flat oven tray.

Place the tray back in the oven until the tops turn golden brown. This will take about 15 minutes.

Serce with a curry or coconut sambal paste.
