How To Make Harissa and Chickpea Stew Recipe

A spicy and hearty stew that combines chickpeas with flavorful harissa paste.

  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp harissa paste
  • 1 can diced tomatoes
  • 2 cans chickpeas, drained and rinsed
  • 2 cups vegetable broth
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh cilantro, chopped (optional)


  1. Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium-high heat.

  2. Add onion and garlic and sauté until softened, about 5 minutes.

  3. Stir in the harissa paste and cook for 1 minute.

  4. Add the diced tomatoes, chickpeas, and vegetable broth.

  5. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 20-25 minutes, until the stew has thickened.

  6. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

  7. Serve with chopped cilantro, if desired.
