How To Make Malai Kofta Recipe

Malai kofta is a creamy and rich Indian dish made with deep-fried potato and cheese balls in a creamy tomato-based gravy.

  • 4-5 medium-sized boiled potatoes, mashed
  • 1/2 cup grated paneer
  • 1/4 cup dry fruits (raisins, cashew nuts, and almonds)
  • 2 tbsp cornflour
  • 1/2 tsp red chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp cumin powder
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil for frying
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 6-7 cloves
  • 1-inch cinnamon stick
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 2 large onions, chopped
  • 3 medium-sized tomatoes, chopped
  • 1/2 cup cream
  • 2 tbsp kasuri methi
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp chopped coriander leaves for garnish


  1. In a mixing bowl, add mashed potatoes, grated paneer, dry fruits, cornflour, red chili powder, cumin powder, and salt. Mix well and make small balls.

  2. Heat oil in a deep frying pan and deep fry the balls until golden brown. Keep aside.

  3. In a separate pan, heat butter and add bay leaf, cloves, cinnamon stick, and cumin seeds. Fry for a few seconds.

  4. Add ginger-garlic paste and sauté for 1-2 minutes.

  5. Add chopped onions and fry until golden brown.

  6. Add chopped tomatoes and cook until they turn soft.

  7. Remove the bay leaf, and blend the mixture into a smooth puree.

  8. Strain the puree and heat it in a pan.

  9. Add cream, kasuri methi, and salt. Simmer until the gravy thickens.

  10. Add the fried koftas in the gravy and simmer for 5-7 minutes.

  11. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with naan or rice.
