How To Make Split Pea and Ham Bean Soup Recipe

Hearty soup made with split peas, ham, and vegetables.

Serves:

Ingredients

  • 1 lb of dried split peas, rinsed and drained
  • 4 cups of chicken stock
  • 1 ham hock or 2 cups of diced ham
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 small celery stalks, chopped
  • 2 small carrots, chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 bay leaf
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large pot or Dutch oven, combine split peas, chicken stock, ham hock or diced ham, onion, celery, carrots, garlic, bay leaf, and salt and pepper to taste.

  2. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 1 hour or until split peas are tender and soup is thickened.

  3. Remove ham hock if using and shred meat, then return meat to pot and discard bone.

  4. Adjust seasonings as needed and serve hot.
