Preparation: 10 minutes
Cooking: 15 minutes
Total: 25 minutes

Serves:

Ingredients

  • 1 pound white fish fillets (such as cod or haddock)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 cup beer
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • Lemon wedges, for serving
  • Tartar sauce, for serving

Instructions

  1. Pat the fish fillets dry with paper towels and cut them into bite-sized pieces.

  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and black pepper.

  3. Gradually pour in the beer while continuing to whisk until the batter is smooth and there are no lumps.

  4. Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan or skillet over medium-high heat until it reaches 375°F (190°C).

  5. Dip the fish pieces into the batter, allowing any excess to drip off, then carefully drop them into the hot oil.

  6. Fry the fish in batches for about 3-4 minutes, or until they are golden brown and crispy. Flip them halfway through cooking.

  7. Use a slotted spoon or tongs to remove the fried fish from the oil and transfer them to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.

  8. Serve the beer-battered fish hot with lemon wedges and tartar sauce.
