  • 2 cups of basmati rice
  • 1 cup of frozen peas
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1-inch piece of ginger, grated
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 4 cups of water


  1. Rinse the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Soak the rice in water for 30 minutes, then drain.

  2. Heat the vegetable oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and let them splutter.

  3. Add the chopped onion, minced garlic, and grated ginger to the pot. Sauté until the onions turn golden brown.

  4. Add the turmeric powder, garam masala, and salt. Mix well.

  5. Add the drained rice and frozen peas to the pot. Stir gently to coat the rice and peas with the spices.

  6. Pour in the water and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for about 15-20 minutes, or until the rice is cooked and the water is absorbed.

  7. Remove from heat and let it sit covered for 5 minutes. Fluff the rice with a fork before serving.
