How To Make BBQ Pita

This easy BBQ pita recipe adds smoky hints to the classic dish. Serve chewy pita bread, made from scratch, using simple ingredients.

Prep: 30 mins
Rise: 30 mins
Cook: 5 mins
Total: 1 hr 5 mins
Serves:

Ingredients

  • 1 cup water, and few tbsp of warm water
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp sea salt
  • tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp clover honey
  • 2 tsp active dry yeast , or 2 tsp of wild yeast, optional

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl add the warm water, yeast, and honey. Whisk to combine and let sit for a few minutes until bubbles appear.

  2. In another large bowl, add the dry ingredients together and make a well in the center.
  3. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry and mix to combine. Knead the dough together for about 5 minutes, then place dough ball into a lightly greased bowl covered for 30 minutes or until doubled in size.
  4. Gently roll and stretch the dough into a 12-inch rope. With a sharp knife, divide the dough into 10 pieces. Roll each piece into a small ball, and then place dough balls onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Let rise for about 30 minutes.

  5. Prepare BBQ and preheat to about 400 degrees F. Lay the pita directly onto the grill plates and close the lid for about 1 to 2 minutes depending on how hot the BBQ is.

  6. Once the pita begins to puff up, flip over to the other side. Grill each side until lightly golden brown in color.

  7. Use as desired and enjoy!

Recipe Notes

If you don’t feel comfortable placing pita directly on the grill, you can line the grill with foil. Pita can be stored in a plastic container for up to a few days.
