Ingredients

  • 2 cans (400g each) of haricot beans
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons tomato puree
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 200ml vegetable broth
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic, and cook until softened and lightly browned.

  2. Stir in the tomato puree, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika, salt, and black pepper. Cook for 2 minutes, stirring constantly.

  3. Add the haricot beans and vegetable broth to the pan. Bring to a simmer and cook for 45 minutes to 1 hour, until the sauce has thickened and the beans are tender.

  4. Serve hot as a side dish or with toast for a traditional British breakfast.
