How To Make Ham Hock and Barley Soup Recipe

A hearty soup with tender ham hock and nutritious barley, perfect for colder weather!

Serves:

Ingredients

  • 1 ham hock
  • 1 cup barley
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 carrots, chopped
  • 2 stalks celery, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 6 cups chicken broth
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, add the ham hock, onion, carrots, celery, garlic, bay leaf, chicken broth, salt, and pepper.

  2. Bring to a boil and then reduce to a simmer.

  3. Simmer for 2.5 to 3 hours.

  4. Remove the ham hock from the pot and shred the meat. Discard the bone and fat.

  5. Add the barley to the pot and simmer for another 30-40 minutes or until tender.

  6. Add the shredded ham hock back to the pot.

  7. Adjust seasoning to taste. Serve hot.
