Love coffee and vodka? You’re in luck! Meet my latest obsession: Black Russian, a cocktail made with vodka and coffee liqueur served over ice. Combining vodka with a little pick-me-up (like a coffee-flavored liqueur) is one of the best ideas EVER. It gives you your caffeine fix with a boozy hug to boot. And with its strong coffee flavor, this cocktail also makes the perfect after-dinner drink to cleanse your palate!
It’s easy to presume that this cocktail originated in Russia. But as a matter of fact, the Black Russian drink was actually created by Gustave Tops during the Cold War. He was a hotel bartender who concocted this vodka cocktail for the American ambassador to Luxembourg at that time. The name of the drink stems merely from the black color of Kahlúa and the use of Russian vodka. And it has been very popular ever since its creation.
So, what’s in a Black Russian drink recipe? As I’ve said earlier, the ingredients include vodka and coffee liqueur. You can use any unflavored vodka for this cocktail. As for the coffee liqueur, my best bet is Kahlúa because it has a strong coffee taste with hints of vanilla and caramel. But feel free to use other coffee liqueurs, such as Tia Maria and Sheridan’s.
To make this cocktail, simply pour the vodka and coffee-flavored liqueur, add ice, stir, and serve. See? Making one of the best coffee liqueur drinks is that easy! Feel free to experiment by adding cream for a White Russian drink. Or top it off with coke for a Dirty Black Russian version. Happy drinking!
