Preparation: 15 minutes
Cooking: 45 minutes
Total: 60 minutes

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup rolled oats
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan.

  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Set aside.

  3. In a large mixing bowl, cream together butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract.

  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with milk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.

  5. Spread half of the batter into the prepared cake pan. Arrange the apple slices over the batter. Sprinkle with brown sugar.

  6. In a small bowl, combine flour, oats, and melted butter. Crumble the streusel mixture over the apples.

  7. Spread the remaining batter over the streusel topping.

  8. Bake for 45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

  9. Serve the caramelised apple cake with streusel topping as is or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
