  • 2 bitter oranges
  • 150g butter, softened
  • 150g sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 200g all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tbsp poppy seeds
  • Zest of 1 bitter orange


  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease and flour a cake pan.

  2. Cut the bitter oranges in half and squeeze out the juice.

  3. In a mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.

  4. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, until well incorporated.

  5. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour and baking powder. Gradually add it to the butter mixture, alternating with the bitter orange juice.

  6. Stir in the poppy seeds and orange zest.

  7. Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and smooth the top.

  8. Bake for 40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

  9. Allow the cake to cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.
