Ingredients

  • 1 small head of red cabbage, thinly sliced
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons of bacon grease or vegetable oil
  • 1/3 cup of apple cider vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons of brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of caraway seeds
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper
  • 1/2 cup of water

Instructions

  1. Heat the bacon grease or vegetable oil in a large pot over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.

  2. Add the sliced red cabbage, apples, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, caraway seeds, salt, black pepper, and water to the pot. Stir well to combine.

  3. Cover the pot and simmer over low heat for 1 hour, stirring occasionally.

  4. After 1 hour, remove the lid and continue simmering for an additional 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld and the cabbage to become tender.

  5. Serve hot as a side dish with roasted meats or sausages.
