How To Make Salt Rising Bread

Ingredients

  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 cups bread flour
  • 2 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine cornmeal, sugar, warm milk, and boiling water. Stir well and let it sit for 20 minutes.

  2. In another bowl, mix salt, bread flour, and yeast. Add this mixture to the cornmeal mixture and stir until well combined.

  3. Cover the bowl with a clean towel and let it sit in a warm place for about 2 hours or until it doubles in size.

  4. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a bread pan with vegetable oil.

  5. Stir the vegetable oil and baking soda into the risen dough. Mix well.

  6. Place the dough into the greased bread pan and let it rise for another 30 minutes.

  7. Bake in the preheated oven for about 40-45 minutes or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

  8. Remove the bread from the pan and let it cool completely on a wire rack before slicing.
