This Boston brown bread is a New England staple that combines whole wheat flour, raisins, and buttermilk for a dense and moist baked rendition.

  • 1cupall purpose flour
  • 2cupswhole wheat flour
  • 1tspbaking soda
  • ¼tspsalt
  • 1cupmolasses
  • cupsbuttermilk
  • cupraisins

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan.

  2. In a large bowl, stir together the all-purpose flour, whole wheat flour, baking soda and salt. Mix in the molasses and buttermilk. Stir in the raisins or currants.

  3. Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan.

  4. Bake for 1 hour in the oven, or until a tester inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean.

  5. Serve warm and enjoy.
