How To Make Penne Pasta with Vodka Sauce

Creamy and flavorful penne pasta tossed in a vodka sauce made with tomatoes, cream, and parmesan cheese.

  • 1 lb Penne pasta
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/4 cup vodka
  • 1 can (28 oz.) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Fresh basil, chopped for garnish


  1. Cook penne pasta according to package instructions and set aside.

  2. Heat olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat.

  3. Add onions and garlic, and sauté for 2-3 minutes or until fragrant.

  4. Add vodka and stir for about a minute.

  5. Add crushed tomatoes and season with salt and pepper.

  6. Bring the sauce to a simmer for 10 minutes.

  7. Reduce heat to low and stir in heavy cream.

  8. Add grated Parmesan cheese, stirring until it is melted and incorporated into the sauce.

  9. Taste, and adjust seasoning as necessary.

  10. Toss the penne pasta with the vodka sauce.

  11. Top with fresh basil and additional Parmesan cheese if desired.
