Ingredients

  • 2 pounds beef chuck, cut into chunks
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon ginger, minced
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
  • 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 2 star anise
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2 dried red chilies
  • 4 carrots, cut into chunks
  • 2 potatoes, cut into chunks
  • 1 cup frozen peas

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Brown the beef chunks on all sides and remove from the pot.

  2. In the same pot, sauté the onion, garlic, and ginger until fragrant.

  3. Add the soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, and brown sugar to the pot. Stir well to combine.

  4. Return the beef to the pot and add the beef broth, star anise, cinnamon stick, and dried red chilies. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low and cover. Simmer for 2 hours.

  5. After 2 hours, add the carrots, potatoes, and frozen peas to the pot. Continue to simmer for an additional hour, or until the beef is tender and the vegetables are cooked through.

  6. Serve the Chinese-style braised beef hot over steamed rice or noodles.
