How To Make Ham Hock and Potato Soup

Hearty soup made with tender ham hock and creamy potatoes.

Serves:

Ingredients

  • 1 smoked ham hock, about 1 lb
  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • 4 cups water
  • 2 lbs potatoes, peeled and diced
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a large pot, combine the ham hock, chicken broth, and water. Bring to a boil and reduce to a simmer.

  2. Add the potatoes, onions, garlic, bay leaves, and thyme.

  3. Cook until the potatoes and ham hock are tender, about 2 hours.

  4. Remove the ham hock and shred the meat. Discard the bone and return the meat to the soup.

  5. Season the soup with salt and black pepper, to taste.

  6. Serve hot, garnished with fresh parsley.
