Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix well.

  2. Add vegetable oil to the dry ingredients and mix until crumbly.

  3. Slowly add warm water and mix until a dough forms.

  4. Knead the dough for a few minutes until smooth and elastic. Cover and let it rest for 10 minutes.

  5. Heat vegetable oil in a deep-fryer or large pot to 375°F (190°C).

  6. Roll out the dough to about 1/8 inch thickness. Cut into squares or shapes of your choice.

  7. Carefully add sopapillas to the hot oil and fry until golden brown, about 1-2 minutes per side.

  8. Remove from oil and drain on paper towels.

  9. Dust sopapillas generously with powdered sugar while they are still warm.

  10. Serve warm and enjoy!
