Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable shortening
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • Oil for frying
  • Cinnamon sugar for topping

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.

  2. Cut in the vegetable shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  3. Add warm water and mix until the dough comes together.

  4. Knead the dough for a minute or two, then cover with a damp cloth and let rest for 30 minutes.

  5. On a floured surface, roll out the dough until it’s about 1/4-inch thick.

  6. Cut into 2-inch squares.

  7. Heat the oil in a deep fryer or heavy skillet over medium-high heat.

  8. Fry the dough squares in the hot oil until golden brown on both sides.

  9. Drain on paper towels and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar.
