How To Make Southern Spicy Fried Chicken

Fried food never tasted this good! Here are some fried recipes to turn boring fried dishes to a tasty and grand feast!

Preparation: 15 minutes
Cooking: 20 minutes
Total: 35 minutes

  • 4 chicken drumsticks
  • 4 chicken thighs
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 tbsp salt
  • 1 tbsp paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp cayenne pepper
  • Vegetable oil for frying

  1. In a large bowl, mix together buttermilk, salt, paprika, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper. Add chicken pieces and marinate for at least 1 hour or overnight in the refrigerator.

  2. In a separate bowl, mix flour and cornmeal.

  3. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet or deep fryer to 350°F (175°C).

  4. Take each chicken piece out of the buttermilk mixture, letting excess drip off, and coat in the flour mixture. Press the flour mixture onto the chicken to ensure a crispy coating.

  5. Carefully place the coated chicken pieces into the hot oil and fry for about 10 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and cooked through.

  6. Remove chicken from oil and drain on a paper towel-lined plate.

  7. Serve hot and enjoy the crispy and spicy Southern fried chicken!
