How To Make Red Wine Sauce

A rich and flavorful sauce made with red wine, perfect for enhancing the taste of meat dishes.

Preparation: 5 minutes
Cooking: 20 minutes
Total: 25 minutes

Serves:

Ingredients

  • 1 cup red wine
  • 1 cup beef or vegetable broth
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 shallot, minced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh herbs (such as thyme or rosemary), optional for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the minced shallot and garlic, and sauté until they become translucent.

  2. Sprinkle the flour over the shallot and garlic mixture, and stir well to combine. Cook for a minute or two, until the flour is slightly toasted.

  3. Slowly pour in the red wine, stirring constantly. Allow the mixture to come to a simmer.

  4. Once the wine has reduced by about half, add the broth and season with salt and pepper. Continue to simmer for another 10-15 minutes, until the sauce has thickened.

  5. Remove the sauce from heat and strain it through a fine mesh strainer to remove any solids.

  6. Serve the red wine sauce over your favorite cooked meat, such as steak or roasted chicken. Garnish with fresh herbs, if desired.
