Ingredients

  • 2 cups all purpose flour
  • ½ tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ½ cup solid vegetable shortening
  • ¾ cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 tsp orange peel, grated
  • 3 tbsp milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

  2. Sift 2 cups flour, ½ tsp. , baking powder, ½ tsp. , baking soda and ¼ tsp. , salt into medium bowl.

  3. Using electric mixer, cream ½ cup , shortening and ¾ cup , sugar in large bowl.

  4. Beat in 1 egg, 1 tsp. , vanilla and 1 tsp. , orange peel.

  5. Mix in dry ingredients alternately with milk, beginning and ending with dry ingredients.
  6. Lightly grease 2 large cookie sheets.
  7. Roll dough out on lightly floured surface to ⅛-inch thickness.

  8. Cut 3-inch-diameter rounds using cookie or biscuit cutter.
  9. Transfer dough rounds to prepared cookie sheets.
  10. Gather and re-roll scraps.
  11. Cut additional cookies.
  12. Sprinkle cookies with sugar.
  13. Bake cookies until golden brown on edges, about 14 minutes.
  14. Transfer to rack and cool completely.
