Serves:
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 onion, chopped
- 1 green bell pepper, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes
- 1 can (8 oz) tomato sauce
- 1 cup cornmeal
- 1 cup milk
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 tablespoon chili powder
- 1 teaspoon cumin
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- Optional toppings: sour cream, chopped green onions
Instructions
-
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
-
In a large skillet, cook the ground beef, onion, green bell pepper, and garlic over medium heat until the beef is browned and the vegetables are tender. Drain any excess grease.
-
Stir in the diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, chili powder, cumin, salt, and black pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook for 10 minutes.
-
In a separate bowl, whisk together the cornmeal and milk until well combined.
-
Pour the ground beef mixture into a greased 9-inch (23 cm) pie dish. Spread the cornmeal mixture evenly over the top.
-
Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes, or until the cornmeal is golden brown and set.
-
Remove from the oven and sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese over the top. Return to the oven for an additional 5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
-
Let the tamale pie cool for a few minutes before serving. Top with sour cream and chopped green onions, if desired.
