  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp orange zest
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • Orange food coloring
  • Black decorating gel


  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  2. In a mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and powdered sugar until light and fluffy.

  3. Add the orange zest, vanilla extract, and salt. Mix well.

  4. Gradually add the flour and mix until a dough forms. If desired, add a few drops of orange food coloring for a brighter orange hue.

  5. Roll the dough into small balls and place them onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them apart.

  6. Flatten each ball slightly with the back of a spoon to create a pumpkin shape.

  7. Use a knife or toothpick to create small “faces” on the cookies, like eyes, nose, and mouth.

  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.

  9. Allow the cookies to cool completely on a wire rack.

  10. Using the black decorating gel, trace over the facial features to make them more defined.
