  • 1egg
  • 1cupwhite sugar
  • ½cupmilk
  • 1⅓cupsunsalted butter,at room temperature
  • 1tbsprum
  • 1tspvanilla extract


  1. Beat egg with a fork in a small, heavy saucepan.

  2. Mix in sugar and milk.

  3. Heat on medium-low heat, whisking constantly, until it just starts to boil.

  4. Continue beating rapidly until mixture thickens to a thin custard consistency.

  5. Remove from heat and cool completely, about 1 hour.

  6. Beat butter in a bowl with an electric mixer until light and creamy, about 5 minutes.

  7. Add cooled custard, 1 to 2 tablespoons at a time, beating well after each addition.

  8. Beat in rum and vanilla extract.

  9. Keep beating until buttercream is very light and fluffy.
