  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • Royal icing, for decorating (recipe below)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  2. In a mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

  3. Add the egg and vanilla extract, and beat until well combined.

  4. Gradually add the flour and salt, mixing well after each addition, until a dough forms.

  5. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness.

  6. Cut out heart shapes using a cookie cutter and place them on the prepared baking sheet.

  7. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden brown.

  8. Allow the cookies to cool completely before decorating with royal icing.

  9. Royal icing recipe:

  10. – 1 cup powdered sugar

  11. – 1 egg white

  12. – 1/2 tsp lemon juice

  13. – Food coloring (optional)

  14. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, egg white, and lemon juice until smooth and glossy.

  15. Add food coloring, if desired, and mix well.

  16. Transfer the royal icing into a piping bag fitted with a small round tip.

  17. Decorate the cooled heart cookies with the royal icing, creating different designs and patterns as desired.

  18. Allow the icing to set and harden before serving.
