Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • Zest of 1 lemon
  • Zest of 1 orange
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 2 tbsp turbinado sugar (for sprinkling)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt.

  3. Add the cold cubed butter to the dry ingredients. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to cut the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

  4. Stir in the lemon zest and orange zest.

  5. In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk, vanilla extract, and beaten egg. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.

  6. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead it gently a few times until it comes together. Pat the dough into a 1-inch thick round.

  7. Using a floured biscuit cutter or a glass, cut out rounds from the dough and transfer them to the prepared baking sheet.

  8. Sprinkle the tops of the scones with turbinado sugar.

  9. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until the scones are golden brown and cooked through.

  10. Remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack before serving.
