Ingredients

  • 2 cups maize flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 cups lukewarm water
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix the maize flour and salt together.

  2. Slowly add the lukewarm water to the flour mixture, stirring until it forms a smooth dough.

  3. Knead the dough on a clean surface for about 3-5 minutes.

  4. Divide the dough into 8 equal portions and shape them into balls.

  5. Flatten each ball to form round discs, approximately 1/2 inch thick.

  6. Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat and brush with vegetable oil.

  7. Cook the arepas on each side for about 4-5 minutes until golden brown.

  8. Transfer the cooked arepas to a baking sheet and bake in a preheated oven at 375°F for 10 minutes.

  9. Serve hot with your choice of fillings such as cheese, beans, meat, or avocado.
