Cooking: 35 minutes
Total: 50 minutes

Serves:

Ingredients

  • 2-3 blood oranges
  • 1/2 cup of unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup of brown sugar
  • 1 cup of all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup of granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp of baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp of salt
  • 1/2 cup of milk
  • 1 tsp of vanilla extract
  • Whipped cream or vanilla ice cream, for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan.

  2. Slice the blood oranges into thin rounds and remove any seeds. Arrange them in a single layer in the bottom of the cake pan.

  3. In a small bowl, combine the melted butter and brown sugar. Pour the mixture over the orange slices, spreading it evenly.

  4. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt. In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk and vanilla extract. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.

  5. Pour the batter over the orange slices in the cake pan, spreading it evenly.

  6. Bake for 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

  7. Remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Carefully invert the cake onto a serving plate.

  8. Serve the blood orange upside-down cake warm or at room temperature, with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream on top, if desired.
