Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 packet instant yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp anise extract
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup raisins (optional)
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 tbsp milk

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt, and instant yeast.

  2. In a separate bowl, mix warm milk, melted butter, 2 eggs, anise extract, and vanilla extract.

  3. Mix the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until a dough forms.

  4. Knead the dough for 5-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.

  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover with a cloth. Let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour.

  6. Preheat oven to 350°F (180°C).

  7. Punch down the dough and knead in raisins (if using).

  8. Divide the dough into 4 equal pieces and shape each piece into a ball.

  9. Place the balls on a greased baking sheet and let them rise for another 30 minutes.

  10. Beat together egg yolk and milk and brush onto the risen balls.

  11. Bake for 30 minutes or until golden brown.

  12. Let cool before serving.
