Total: 25 minutes

Serves:

Ingredients

  • 4 green plantains
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • Salt for seasoning

Instructions

  1. Peel the plantains and cut them into 1-inch thick slices.

  2. In a large frying pan, heat enough vegetable oil to cover the bottom of the pan over medium-high heat.

  3. Add the plantain slices to the hot oil and fry for about 1-2 minutes on each side, or until they become golden and slightly crispy.

  4. Remove the fried plantains from the pan and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

  5. Using a tostonera or the bottom of a cup, flatten each plantain slice to about 1/4 inch thick.

  6. Return the flattened plantains to the hot oil and fry for an additional 2-3 minutes on each side, or until they are crisp and golden brown.

  7. Remove the tostones from the oil and place them back on the paper towel-lined plate. Season with salt to taste.

  8. Serve the tostones warm as an appetizer or side dish. They are delicious on their own or served with a dip or salsa of your choice.
