Ingredients

  • 4 large potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup grated Gruyere cheese
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Fresh thyme leaves for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

  2. In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook until caramelised, about 15-20 minutes. Set aside.

  3. In a separate saucepan, heat the heavy cream and minced garlic over medium heat until it starts to simmer. Remove from heat and set aside.

  4. Arrange a layer of potato slices in a greased baking dish. Season with salt and pepper.

  5. Spread a layer of caramelised onions over the potatoes, followed by a sprinkle of Gruyere cheese. Repeat this layering process until all the ingredients are used, finishing with a layer of cheese on top.

  6. Pour the heated cream and garlic mixture over the layers of potatoes, onions, and cheese.

  7. Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 40 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 20 minutes, or until the top is golden and the potatoes are cooked through.

  8. Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh thyme leaves.
