Preparation: 20 minutes
Cooking: 1 hour 30 minutes
Total: 1 hour 50 minutes

Serves:

Ingredients

  • 1 lb steak, cut into small cubes
  • 8 shallots, peeled and halved
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp thyme leaves
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 1 tbsp mustard seeds
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed
  • 1/4 cup cold water

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

  2. In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add steak cubes and cook until browned. Remove from skillet and set aside.

  3. In the same skillet, add shallots and garlic. Cook until shallots are caramelized, about 10 minutes. Remove from skillet and set aside.

  4. In the same skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Stir in flour until well combined. Slowly pour in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, stirring constantly until thickened. Add thyme leaves and season with salt and pepper. Cook for another 2 minutes.

  5. Add cooked steak, roasted shallots, and frozen peas to the skillet. Stir until well combined. Remove from heat.

  6. In a separate bowl, combine mustard seeds, all-purpose flour, and salt. Cut in cold butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add cold water and mix until a dough forms.

  7. Roll out the dough on a floured surface and transfer to a pie dish.

  8. Pour the steak and shallot mixture into the pie dish, spreading evenly.

  9. Cover the pie with the mustard crust, pressing the edges to seal.

  10. Cut a few slits on the top of the crust to allow steam to escape.

  11. Bake in the preheated oven for 50-60 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown.

  12. Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
