Serves:
Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup cold water
- 4 tbsp unsalted butter, cold and cut into small cubes
- 4 tbsp vegetable oil, for frying
- 2 Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and diced
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
- Powdered sugar, for dusting
Instructions
-
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add in the cold butter cubes and use a pastry cutter or your fingers to incorporate the butter into the flour until it resembles coarse crumbs.
-
Slowly pour in the cold water, a little at a time, and mix until the dough comes together. Shape the dough into a ball, cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
-
In a separate bowl, mix together the diced apples, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla extract until well combined.
-
Roll out the chilled dough on a floured surface to about 1/8 inch thick. Use a round cookie cutter or a glass to cut out circles of dough, roughly 4 inches in diameter.
-
Place a spoonful of the apple filling in the center of each dough circle. Fold the dough over the filling to form a half-moon shape and press the edges together to seal.
-
In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Carefully place the pies in the hot oil and fry for about 3-4 minutes on each side, until golden brown. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
-
Sprinkle the fried apple pies with powdered sugar before serving. They can be enjoyed warm or at room temperature.
