How To Make Hot Dog on a Stick’s Soft Pretzel Recipe

Soft and chewy pretzels that are perfect for snacking or as a side to your hot dog on a stick.

Preparation: 15 minutes
Cooking: 10-12 minutes
Total: 25-27 minutes

Serves:

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 package active dry yeast
  • 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter, melted and cooled
  • 10 cups water
  • 2/3 cup baking soda
  • Coarse salt, for sprinkling
  • Mustard or cheese sauce, for dipping

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and salt. Sprinkle package of yeast on top and let sit for 5 minutes.

  2. Add in flour and melted butter. Stir with a wooden spoon until the dough comes together.

  3. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.

  4. Place dough in a large bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let rise in a warm, draft-free place for 1 hour.

  5. Preheat oven to 425°F.

  6. In a large pot, combine 10 cups of water and baking soda. Bring to a rolling boil.

  7. Divide dough into 8 equal parts.

  8. Roll each part into a 2-foot long rope, twist into pretzel shape and dip in the boiling water with a slotted spoon for 30 seconds.

  9. Remove from water with slotted spoon and place pretzels onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

  10. Sprinkle with coarse salt and bake for 10-12 minutes until golden brown.

  11. Serve with mustard or cheese sauce for dipping.
