Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour, all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt.

  3. Add the softened butter to the dry ingredients and mix until it resembles coarse crumbs.

  4. Gradually add in the buttermilk, mixing until a soft dough forms.

  5. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead lightly until it comes together.

  6. Shape the dough into a round loaf and place it onto a greased baking sheet.

  7. Use a sharp knife to make a shallow cross on top of the loaf.

  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 50-60 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

  9. Remove from the oven and let cool on a wire rack before serving.
