Ingredients

  • 4 steaks (preferably ribeye or sirloin), about 1 inch thick
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (14 ounces) diced tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (adjust to taste)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Chopped fresh basil or parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Season the steaks with salt and pepper on both sides.

  2. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the steaks and cook for about 4-5 minutes per side for medium-rare, or until desired level of doneness. Remove the steaks from the skillet and set aside to rest.

  3. In the same skillet, add the onion and garlic. Cook until the onion is translucent and softened, about 5 minutes.

  4. Add the diced tomatoes, tomato paste, dried oregano, dried basil, and red pepper flakes to the skillet. Stir well to combine. Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for about 10 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

  5. Return the steaks to the skillet, along with any accumulated juices. Spoon the pizzaiola sauce over the steaks. Cook for another 2-3 minutes to warm up the steaks and let them absorb the flavors of the sauce.

  6. Remove the steaks from the skillet and let them rest for a few minutes. Garnish with fresh basil or parsley. Serve hot with additional pizzaiola sauce on the side.
