- 1 tsp dried thyme
- 1 bay leaf
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 4 slices of bread
- 1 cup shredded Gruyere cheese
Instructions
-
In a large pot, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook until caramelized and golden brown, stirring occasionally for about 20 minutes.

Stir in the flour, garlic powder, and dried thyme. Cook for an additional 2 minutes.
-
Slowly pour in the beef broth, stirring well to combine. Add the bay leaf and season with salt and pepper.

Bring the soup to a simmer and cook for 15-20 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
-
Meanwhile, preheat the broiler. Place the bread slices on a baking sheet and sprinkle with Gruyere cheese. Broil until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
-
Remove the bay leaf from the soup and ladle it into bowls. Serve each bowl with a cheesy bread slice on top.
