Preparation: 10 minutes
Cooking: 15 minutes
Total: 25 minutes

Serves:

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup beer
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper (optional)
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • Assorted vegetables or protein of choice (e.g. onion rings, shrimp, chicken)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, black pepper, paprika, and cayenne pepper (if using).

  2. Gradually whisk in the beer until a smooth batter forms. Let the batter rest for 5 minutes.

  3. In a deep pot or fryer, heat enough vegetable oil to fully submerge the vegetables or protein. Heat to 375°F (190°C).

  4. Dip the vegetables or protein into the beer batter, ensuring they are fully coated.

  5. Carefully place the coated vegetables or protein into the hot oil, making sure not to overcrowd the pot. Fry in batches if necessary.

  6. Fry for about 2-3 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy. Use a slotted spoon or tongs to remove the fried items from the oil and transfer them to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

  7. Repeat the dipping and frying process with the remaining vegetables or protein.

  8. Serve the beer-battered vegetables or protein hot and crispy, with your favorite dipping sauce.
