Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3/4 cup warm milk
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup raisins (optional)
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar, for dusting
  • 1 cup vanilla sauce, for serving

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, yeast, and salt. Mix well.

  2. Add warm milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Mix until a soft dough forms.

  3. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5-7 minutes, until smooth and elastic.

  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

  5. Punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal-sized portions. Shape each portion into a smooth ball.

  6. Place the dumplings on a greased baking sheet, leaving some space between each dumpling.

  7. Cover the dumplings with a damp towel and let them rise for another 30 minutes.

  8. Preheat a large skillet over medium heat. Place the dumplings in the skillet and cook for about 5 minutes, until golden brown on the bottom.

  9. Flip the dumplings, reduce the heat to low, and cover the skillet with a tight-fitting lid. Cook for another 15-20 minutes, until the dumplings are cooked through and soft in the center.

  10. Remove the dumplings from the skillet and dust with powdered sugar.

  11. Serve the sweet German dumplings warm with vanilla sauce and enjoy!
