How To Make Bread Sauce

A creamy and flavorful sauce made from bread crumbs, perfect to serve alongside roast meats.

Preparation: 10 minutes
Cooking: 20 minutes
Total: 30 minutes

Serves:

Ingredients

  • 4 slices of stale bread
  • 2 cups of whole milk
  • 1 onion, peeled and studded with cloves
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1/2 tsp of ground nutmeg
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tbsp of butter

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, add the milk, onion, bay leaf, and nutmeg. Heat over medium heat until the milk starts to steam, then remove from heat and let steep for 10 minutes.

  2. Meanwhile, tear the bread into small pieces and place in a blender or food processor. Pulse until it turns into coarse breadcrumbs.

  3. Strain the milk mixture to remove the onion and bay leaf. Return the milk to the saucepan and bring it to a simmer.

  4. Add the breadcrumbs to the simmering milk and stir continuously until the sauce thickens, about 10 minutes.

  5. Stir in the butter until melted and season with salt and pepper to taste.

  6. Remove from heat and let the sauce rest for a few minutes before serving.
