Irish Apple Cake Recipe

Apple cake is a traditional sweet dessert in Ireland. It is very similar to a simple spice cake with the addition of apples. The Irish apple cake would make a good treat for a St. Patrick’s Day party or just for a dessert on a winter’s night.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 4 granny smith apples, cored and diced
  • 1/4 cup walnuts, chopped
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

  2. In a bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the egg, apples, walnuts and vanilla.

  3. Sift in the dry ingredients and mix in well. Pour batter into a greased 8-inch square baking pan.

  4. Bake until lightly brown and a skewer comes out clean from the center, for about 45 minutes.

  5. Serve warm or cooled with whipped cream, custard or vanilla ice cream.
