Ingredients

  • 1 lb pork shoulder, cut into strips
  • 3 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 tablespoon Chinese five-spice powder
  • 1 tablespoon cooking oil
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon white pepper
  • Optional: red food coloring for traditional red coloring

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, mix together the garlic, soy sauce, hoisin sauce, honey, Chinese five-spice powder, cooking oil, rice vinegar, sesame oil, and white pepper. If desired, add a few drops of red food coloring.

  2. Add the pork strips to the marinade and allow them to marinate for at least 2 hours, or overnight for best results.

  3. Preheat the grill to medium-high heat.

  4. Remove the pork from the marinade, reserving the marinade for basting.

  5. Grill the pork for about 8-10 minutes per side, or until it is cooked through and has a charred and caramelized exterior. Baste with the reserved marinade while grilling.

  6. Remove the pork from the grill and let it rest for a few minutes before slicing.

  7. Serve the Chinese Barbeque Pork (Char Siu) with steamed rice or in a noodle dish. Enjoy!
